Solomon Whitchurch
« on: Tuesday 10 March 15 08:37 GMT (UK) »
goodaye folks>>>

I have been researching the life of Solomon Whitchurch who from a tobacco worker and insurance worker in Bristol GLS ventures to Australia where he becomes a Baptist Minister.    To date I have his birth cert, baptism, complete censuses, electoral roll entries, death cert, probate, and a few of his passenger records travelling to and from the UK..       However , >>>>>>>>>>

I am missing a passenger record him travelling to the UK before 8/9 Nov 1930.......

The next problem I am facing is where in heck did he do his Seminary Training for the Baptist church????????????????????????????????????????????????

So if anyone knows a little more than I on a] is there a Baptist Training school in Bristol that would have been going from say 1900 to the immigration of Solomon in 1912 to Australia......

OR

Is there is Baptist Ministry Training facility in Melbourne Victoria Australia.....

or did the Baptists just give the incoming rectors or priests a Bible and a church and leave the rest up to them to do????  [ which I find unlikely.......]     Note I did find one electoral roll where he was living with a rector in Victoria who may have been his guidance.....

So I guess what I need is links to a] learn more about the in depth training of Baptists and b] some resolve on that infernal passenger record....

To add to the dilema someone has come forward who is a grandchild of Solomons sib George who actually met this chap..... so I would like to complete a biography as that person only met Solomon when they were knee high to a grasshopper....   cheers folks

fusion
 :)

There is currently a Bristol Baptist College?
http://www.baptist.org.uk/Groups/220763/Bristol_Baptist_College.aspx

Haven't found any dates for it's founding, yet.

EDIT:
Found this article; a sermon dated 1843, which refers to the History of Bristol Baptisi College.

1.  Does any portion or a transcription exist for any census from 1801 to 1831 for Bristol..... namely the Whitchurch family, or sometimes spelt WITchurch?

2. Has anyone written any historical pieces regarding the wharves or factories nearby to St MAry Redcliffe church?

3. Has anyone written any articles regarding the history and detailed workings of tobacco processing in Bristol.....?

4. Looking for a suitable list of butchers shops ..... in a place called The Chessels.....  from about 1900 until the 1960s..fragments or portion lists would be helpful...

and could I have folk who know Bristol or know the local area please reply ....... thank you

Any holdings of the 1801-1831 censuses will be held at Bristol Record Office - they aren't online.

Essex University have produced a document detailing what survives:
www.essex.ac.uk/history/documents/research/RT2_Wall_2012.pdf

Bristol parishes start at page 57 in that document.

The Floating Harbour is very close to St Mary Redcliffe, as is the River Avon.
Bathurst basin was originally accessed by a lock from the River, and is now accessed from the Floating Harbour. These can still be seen on modern maps.
Do an internet search for "Floating Harbour", which will turn up some articles.

and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Harbour

Tobacco production was by W.D. and H. O. Wills - there are sure to be articles available on an internet search.

Just to add: The Chessels was an area of Bedminster.
Bedminster was a part of Somerset until the 1890's, and so outside of Bristol!

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chessels

I used to live in Bedminster, and worked at a number of offices in Bristol City Centre and Bedminster.
Including Imperial Tobacco which was the holding company for WD & HO Wills. ;D

For historic street maps, try http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/
Uses Silverlight.
