James Herbert Bly of Innerleithen
« on: Tuesday 10 March 15 11:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I am new to this site and have just found this section.  I wonder if anyone would be able to help me with more information regarding my ancestor James Herbert Bly.  James is the son of Robert Bly (Bligh/Blyth) and Susan nee Evetts.   He was born on 7 June 1881 and was baptised on 28 October 1881 in Houghton On The Hill (near North Pickenham) in Norfolk.  In 1891 he was living in Norfolk with his parents and, I think, I have traced him on the 1901 census as a servant living at 2 Lochmalony Bothy.  In 1913-1914 James Bly is listed in McDonalds Scottish Directory and Gazetteer as a Fishmonger at 75 High Street Innerleithen.  I believe him to be the same James Herbert Bly who joined the Army Service Corps and served between 1914 and 1920.

On 21 September 1921 James married Christina Whitson Horsborough in Edinburgh, I have seen copies of the marriage documents which also name his parents.  He is listed as a widower although I can find no trace of a first marriage.  James was still alive when Christina died in August 1956.

I would be very grateful if anyone can provide any further information regarding James or give me any further hints on where to look.  Thank you to all for taking the time to read my post.

Hi ,

Scotlandspeople has a James Herbert Bly death 1969 Innerleithen Peebles , born c. 1882.
It's too recent to view online so it would need to be ordered.

There are only 2 marriages on Scotlands People for a James Herbert Bly - one is the 2nd. marriage you mention and the other is clearly his first one:

James Herbert Bly married Hannah Hymers 1901 St. Edinburgh.   You'd have to purchase some credits to actually view the certificate.

At least 2 daughters born before 1911 - Margaret Munro Bly b.1901 Linlithgow and Beatrice Everett (?) 1905 Falkland, Fife

They appear to be the only Bly family in Scotland at the time so these next 2 are probably their children too:

David Herbert Bly born 1915 Innerleithen, Peebles
Camiel (?wonder if this should read Daniel perhaps) Albert born 1917 Camlachie, Glasgow.

Scotland - Spence, Horne, Cowan, Moffat
London -  Monk

In the 1911 Scottish Census there is a Hannah Bly aged 35 showing in Dumfries.
Second person showing as James H Bly aged 29.

Just as an update, I think I have found David Herbert Bly leaving the UK headed for New Zealand in 1951.  Does anyone know if there is still a fishmonger in Innerleithen - I can't find one in any directory and/or if photographs exist showing the show in the High Street?

Thanks again.
