What happened to Ann Wallis from Chilton, Berks?
« on: Tuesday 10 March 15 15:50 GMT (UK) »
My 2 x great grandmother was Sarah Wallis bapt 3 April 1808 in Chilton Berks illegitimate daughter of Ann Wallis. I believe Ann was the daughter of Joshua Wallis and Ann (nee Hicks) b abt 1786. But I haven't been able to find out what happened to Ann Wallis after giving birth to Sarah.
Did she marry and have family and when did she die?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Useful to have all the Berkshire records linked from one page. There are more than the Hugh Wallis list I had bookmarked. I have searched Ancestry, FindMyPast and Familysearch, but either burials aren't comprehensilvely indexed or Ann married outside Chilton and was therefore buried in her married name either in Chilton or elsewhere so would be difficult to trace.

Hi Lizziel,

You probably have got this but in case you haven't;
Chilton;
21-1-1828 John Annetts, widr, to Sarah Wallis
wits; Joseph Annett, Martha Welch.  By Banns

So far as burials are concerned, the only one I can find is for a Ann Wallis 8-4-1827 aged 61 - obviously not the Ann you are after. Nor could I find her burial in Chilton.
There are 2 Joshua Wallace/Wallis burials;
7-7-1802 Joshua Wallace, Labr
16-1-1803 Joshua Wallis s/o Joshua & Ann

Not much to offer i'm afraid.

Thanks Alan,
John Annetts and Sarah Wallis were my 2 x great grandparents. I had marriage date but not witnesses. Joseph was his brother, who also married a Sarah and both were transported for life for arson. Don't know who Martha was - but Welch rings a bell.

The Ann Wallis / Wallace buried in 1827 was Ann nee Hicks, the mother of the Ann I'm looking for and my 4 x great grandmother. I think the Joshua buried in 1802 was Ann nee Hicks husband (my 4 x great grandfather) and the Joshua in 1803 was their 13 year old son and brother to the Ann I'm looking for.

Ann would have been about 22 when she gave birth to Sarah. Perhaps she left the village to work to support Sarah and left her with Joshua and Ann (Sarah's grandparents). She might have married anywhere and not returned to Chilton and never told her husband she had a child.

Several trees on line have my Ann marrying a William Montague on 27 Jan 1812 in Goring, but I am very dubious if that is correct. The 1841 census has Ann Montague nee Wallis born in Oxfordshire not Berks. Her age at death was 54 (death cert) and age at death on burial record was 56, so not helpful. Informant on death cert was her daughter. There were at least four children born to William Montague and Ann. I have no DNA  matches with any living descendants of Montagues as far as I can find. (but none may have tested of course).
Can anyone find an Ann Wallis who is a better candidate than mine to have married William Montague?

Hi LizzieL,

There certainly was a marriage between Wm. Montague & Ann Wallis on 27-1-1812 in Goring.
I have just seen the original register entry.

Have sent a PM

PS; How about the Ann Wallis bapt. 28-4-1792 in Whitchurch, Oxon adjacent parish to Goring?

The Ann in Whitchurch 1792 looks a bit younger than even the youngest quoted age at death, but there could be a lot of uncertainty among her remaining family about her actual age after she died. Also she may not have been baptised as a very young baby.
In 1841 she is age 50, so ought to be between 50 and 54, giving year of birth in range 1787 - 1791. William survives to 1851 and gives his age then as 62 (1789) - he was also recorded as 50 in 1841, so that matches.

However the location of Whitchurch is very much more likely than Chilton, Berks.

I've been looking into the Ann Wallis from Whitchurch, but it looks as if she may have married Absolom Hoan in Whitchurch on 31 October 1809.
