Mary Haggart 1803 Alyth, Angus, Scotland.
« on: Tuesday 10 March 15 18:02 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the maiden name of a Mary Haggart who was born in Alyth, Angus about 1803. She married a David Haggart who was born about 1801 in Cults, Fife. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi there.

Looks like Mary's name could be Crockat
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYSY-2HM

There are several births to David Haggart and Mary Crockat in Fife.

Looby :)

Thank you for that :) do you know if there's any records for a Mary Ballingall? Some of the children have it as a middle name and I'm wondering if that could be it, or as you said it could be crockat

There are a few women with that name  :-\

Family names could be used as (and still are ) as middle names. Ballingall could be a grandmother's maiden name.

Which children had the name please?

Looby :)

Have you found the family  on the 1841 Census?
In the household before theirs at Markinch Fife, there is a man

James Crockatt     age 77      Linen Hand Loom Weaver      Born Outside  Census County.

This old neighbour could be Mary's father.

Looby :)

Ah, I think it was a grandchild of hers actually, sorry I was getting confused looking at the family tree! :) I think that her granddaughter was called Mary Ballingall Haggart, so yea as you've said it could definitely be Crockatt and James could possibly be her father?

Hi Scott,

There is a marriage of a Daivid Haggard and Mary Crockat at Alyth on 29th May 1825
.

They have David - 27th Oct 1826                    Mary -11th Nov 1828         Jean- 21st Feb 1831
               William - 4 th Jul 1835                    James Haggart - 14th Oct 1837.

There could be more children but these births are recorded on Familysearch.
You would be best to look at originals ob Scotlands People website - www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk    - this is a pay to view site, but is the best for Scottish Family History records as it has all the original documents.
If Mary and David Haggart died after 1855 in Scotland you should also be able to find and view their death records which should have their parents names (assuming the informant of the deaths knew them) recorded.
James Crockatt living next to or in the same building as the Haggarts in 1841 could be Mary's father. He too is not from Fife originally.

A granddaughter called Mary Balligall Haggart  - there is a chance this child could have been called after her maternal grandmother.

Looby

This might not be strictly relevant, but it might help to find places associated with your Mary Haggart.

Most of the parish of Alyth is in Perthshire, not in Angus/Forfarshire. So if Mary's birthplace is recorded in an original source as 'Alyth, Angus' that would narrow down your search for her birthplace to the part of the parish that is in Angus.

From Fullarton's Gazetteer of 1842: "At the north-western extremity of the parish there is a beautiful little district surrounded with hills, and intersected by the Ericht, which in summer has a delightful appearance. That part of it connected with this parish, called the Blacklunnans, lies in the county of Angus."

See http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO1460 and adjacent squares.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you both for this information, yes it's recorded as Mary Haggart abt 1803 Alyth, Angus, so Alyth stretches over the border of Perthshire/Angus?
