Orphan to farm hand
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 09:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can some kind soul out there tell me,  if an orphan was taken out of his orphanage of 9+ years and his school (1929), placed at another school and on a farm as a farm hand - who would be responsible for this, where should the records be held and who would likely be paying for his homestay and schooling if he had no parents around at all?

Seems nothing to be found at Social Welfare Records unfortunately.

Hello.

On the assumption that your Dad did not have a birth registration, in some names/s yet to be discovered. Did he live long enough to draw a pension?

If so, what supporting information did he file in his claim for receiving a pension. ? If he stayed long enough in one locality, did he have a legal practice he went to for advice. While the big outfits don't keep papers longer than they have to, there will still be records held by some of the longstanding rural community practices, even when the practice names have changed.

Hi Sue,

I think you would need to find out the name of the orphanage or benevolent society your orphan lived at before being taken out, and then determine who would have operated that establishment.  It could have been anyone from the Anglican Church to the Salvation Army.

Do you know where your orphan was living (town, school name, orphanage) at the date of removal?

Cheers,

Hi Spades,

Dear me!  So sorry I was unaware of the previous history.  I will have a wee read and re-evaluate.

Many thanks,
