Hi Ann

Can you give a possible year range to enable researchers to help you and the area where you think it took place ;)

John Heriot was born about 1825 and married Ann Blackie, 1846, Prestonpans. John died 1899 in Edinburgh, on his death certificate his parents names were Thomas Heriot and Euphemia Newlands, I would assume they married around the Haddington area. I think I have found them on the 1841 census Thomas aged 60, Euphemia 60 as well, children names were Margaret aged 35, Andrew 30, Janet 30, Christian 25, Martha 20, Thomas 20, and a Thomas Pickins aged 1. 1851 census Thomas 76, Euphemia 46, Andrew 48, Janet 45, Christian 38, Martha 36, Thomas 34, Thomas Picken 9 and John Falough 4. 1861 census Thomas and Euphemia must have died, Andrew 58, Thomas 42, Christian 47, Martha 44, Thomas 20, John 13. Thomas senior was a mason on the 1841 and 1851 census, Thomas Junior was also a mason.

Have tried ancestry for a marriage for Thomas and Euphemia.

This is one of a number of good posts to help you understand better Scottish records, Ann. www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0

The other thing to remember, is that official Scottish registration only started from 1855. There may not be a parish entry to be found for their marriage/banns unfortunately.

I also cannot see any children's births or christenings for Thomas and wife Euphemia pre 1855 in the OPRs  :-\

I reckon they got married about, 1796 to 1800, their 1st child was born about 1800 Andrew and died 1876, don't have the childrens actual dates of birth. Janet born 1806 died 1853, Matthew 1809 died 1854, Margaret 1811 died 1883, Christina 1815 died 1880, Martha 1820 died 1887, Thomas 1821 died 1891, John 1826 died 1899 and Euphemia 1831 died 1903. Newlands is spelt a few different ways. Neillings, Neilans and Neilands.

Hello Lyndsey,

Have you looked at this possible death cert for Thomas? Hopefully it will give a little more information.

1855 Bolton, East Lothian, Thomas Heriot, recorded birth year 1774

I thought I had sent a reply. Have both death certificates not much on them.

Was the 1855 death that Br1gau mentioned for Thomas the correct one? Normally, for the first year of official Scottish BMD registrations, those certs had lots of extra info.
