Ok then, you will have to take a trip to Edinburgh. ring first at a place called scotlands people.
Book a pc for the day. not sure how much, (12.00 when I went some years ago)
Their records are the best, you will have the pc from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.
It will even tell you the time of the births.
Not for births before the start of civil registration in 1855.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Have you checked this family out. He may have thought he was born in Roxburghshire if that was  the first place he remembers living at.

Can any one tell me where the records are held for this village for the years around 1790 -1800

The original records are held at the National Records of Scotland who used them to populate the Scotlands People database.

Hi Normamac,

That is a new one, so yes I will check it further thanks. It does help that his father is listed as Archibald as well (if naming conventions are to be relied upon).  Where they lived might have a bearing on this especially if it is a distance from Roxburgh as I am sure that in those days people did not stray far from their place of birth. But this is the 1st new lead  I have seen in some time...thanks

Richard

ps. I can't go to the actual records as I no longer live in  the UK
