Portrait of young Naval cadet/gentleman c.1790
« on: Friday 13 March 15 10:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I have a digital copy of a young naval person which I will attach. I think it derives from the 1790-1800 era.
It may be my ggg grandfather George Mainland b.c1773 on Rousay, Orkney. On the back of this portrait are some very inky marks but the name Halcrow can just be deciphered.
My ggg grandfather married a Mary Halcrow at St. Georges-in-the-East, Middlesex in 1810.
I am hoping that an amateur marine history specialist "out there" may be able to tell me something about the period when this uniform etc. was worn.
I look forward to all suggestions.

MAPS,  have you tried,

http://www.Cursiter.com/

Orkney website see if they have anything on him?

An interesting book is "The Little General & the Rousay Crofters", later than you're after but much detail about the island families and their struggle with the laird.

Skoosh.

You may have to consider up to 1830. That jacket is not 1790 to 1820ish.

Hi Skoosh,
I do know the Cursiter site and I actually have some info about George Mainland in Rousay, Orkney and also the Middlesex families but thanks anyway. The Little General book sounds interesting.

Thanks Regorian, I may need to change tactics now and look at George's son George Thomas Mainland who was born in 1811 and was also a Master Mariner.

Thank you both very much for the quick replies,
