1901 has Ellen Lewin b 1867 Ayston, Rutland (which is where Bertie was also born).

1891  has Ellyn Lewin b 1868 Ayston as a servant, 2 doors down from William Lewin and family. I wonder if this Ellyn/Ellen is Thomas's mother?

OP, did you get the mother's name from the army records, or do you have a copy of the birth certificate?

I've put this on the duplicate thread as well

Is he the Thomas William Lewin who was killed 15 Jun 1917 in WW1? If so, it looks as if he was illegitimate as his records give his next of kin as mother Mrs   Miss Ellen Lewin. Mrs has been firmly crossed out. This could make finding his father very difficult.

Looks as if Elizabeth listed on the 1901 census - was Ellen Elizabeth Lewin on the birth registration - Q3 - 1893 Uppingham Rutland.
Ellen is with Thomas and the grandfather in the later census.
