Farquharson and Shaw family research in Perthshire
« on: Friday 13 March 15 21:43 GMT (UK) »
If you are researching families with the names of Shaw or Farquharson in Perthshire, the following may be of interest:-

Recently we came across the following three entries in the Blair Atholl OPR.

John Farquhardson and Jannet Ross in Cnappaig had a son, John, born 5 Dec 1754.

John Shaw and Janet Ross in Cnappaig had a son, Donald, born 2 Feb 1757.

John Shaw and Janet Ross in Cnappaig had a son, Alexander, born 20 Jan 1760.

As the name of Janet Ross is probably unique in records of this parish we assumed that John Farquhardson had died and that Janet Ross had re-married.  However, there is only one marriage entry for Janet Ross in the Blair Atholl OPR.

John Shaw in Cnappaig and Janet Ross in Cnappaig, married 14 Mar 1754.

The inescapable conclusion is that Shaw is equivalent to Farquharson / Farquhardson / Farguhardson / McFerquar and vici versa.

(Cnappaig in near Aldclune on the Blair Atholl / Moulin boundary)

This might be of interest:When Lord Lewis Gordon initiated the Deeside Jacobite movement in 1745, he appointed Francis Farquharson of Monaltrie as Colonel. Monaltrie, or the 'Baron Ban' was a very close friend of the Crathienaird, Glenisla and Glenshee Shaws.  When Monaltrie mustered the Farquharsons, many Shaws joined him, or joined the regiment of their neighbour, the Earl of Airlie. Risking all with the Baron Ban and young Lord David (Ogilvy), the Shaws fought at both Falkirk and Culloden*.

Note:  Farquharson descends from Shaw.

This is the same person - not a second marriage.

John Farquharson-Shaw descends from the elder brother of Finlay Mor Farquharson - Farquhar Mackintosh-Shaw of Coldrach - as also do the McKerchers in Glen Lyon and Loch Tay.

See History under http://www.mckercher.org

I am still mapping out the families and have not researched this one.

Cheers,
