Information on an 1870s Birth Certificate please?
« on: Saturday 14 March 15 11:40 GMT (UK) »
If I ordered a birth certificate for someone I only have a baptism record for (which also shows the birth date) what information would be recorded? I have not been able to find the GRO ref, but if I did would the certificate have the mother's maiden name on it?

The details contained on a full birth certificate include:
Name, date and place of birth.
Father's name (if given at time of registration), place of birth and occupation.
Mother's name, place of birth, maiden surname and, after 1984, occupation.
(Registrations made before 1969 do not include details of the parents' place of birth and mother's occupation.)

What was the name of the child?  Maybe we could find a GRO ref for you  :)

If parents were unmarried for example it could be registered under the mother's name.

Thank you for the replies.  The girl's name was Mary Augusta Jane Susannah Baptised 4 May 1873, born 27 Dec 1872, parent's names Robert and Mary Vincent.  St Pancras.  I am pretty certain these two were married, but its a good thought for other children I can't find!

Parents liked a lot of names didn't they?!

Another daughter baptised was Mary Eliza Amelia in 1876 but I don't see a registration for her either  :-\

Not even finding them on a census nor marriage for parents, guess that's why you want to find the mothers maiden name, they seem to have had other children with lots of names but  ???

Could be a clue here if the right family - a tree has

Mary Eliza Amelia Vincent born 1875 France

That would explain why no birth registrations over here.

Very interesting replies and thank you all.  Yes the Mary Eliza Amelia is my Grandmother.  I found her baptism a few months ago and the 1881 Census listing her as born in France.  Then I look again only a couple of days ago on Ancestry links to Robert and Mary Vincent and up pops Mary Augusta etc etc.  As you say lots of names.  I am hoping to get a proper Birth Certificate for my Grandmother and her sister but wondered as they appear only to have been baptised, not registered, I would not be able to.

Is this so?  I am not sure how the GRO works?  Any thought would be very welcome.

The 1881 I am looking at is confusing - is this the same one you have because father here is not Robert as it should be.  I don't want to lead you up the wrong path  :)

George Vincent 46
Mary 47
Robert 10 born South America
Mary 5 born France
