Many, many thanks for the information on Joseph Hawkins and family, also his marriage.
Would you know by a later census if Joseph Hawkins was married before the marriage in 1916, as he would have been 60 years of age to Mary E, Varney's 40.

No sorry I didn't come across a marriage - here he is in 1891 Pitstone Green Farm - mistranscribed as Benson

You're very welcome Carol.  Just noticed there is an anc tree with Leonard John Hawkins -  Born 1 July 1881 in  Pitstone, Buckinghamshire, passed away 6 Aug 1975 in  Pitstone Green Farm, Pitstone, Buckinghamshire. Married Alice Louise Clements - The Baptist Chapel Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire in 1915. Alice passed away 30 April 1973 Pitstone Green Farm, Pitstone, Buckinghamshire.
Tree had a headstone photograph.
There would be other information on members of the Hawkins family and worth a look if you have anc. If not and you want more info, give a shout.
