Robert Hume, Thorntonloch
« on: Sunday 15 March 15 07:58 GMT (UK) »
Robert Hume and Elizabeth Simpson - unknown marriage date.  First child Agnes born 1759 in Cockburnspath.  Trying to track parents of Robert Hume.  Plenty of Humes in the area that appear to be relatives, i.e. witnesses to baptisms, but cannot find links.  Any help appreciated.

Hi,

Looking on family search, Robert & Elizabeth’s sons were 1. William, 2. Thomas & 3. John. Were there others?  Usually the first son was named after the paternal grandfather, giving William as a likely name for Robert’s father.

Do you know any more about Robert, his occupation etc.?  What was his connection to Thorntonloch?  If he was born there you’re likely looking for a baptism record in the Parish of Dunbar

Children of Robert Hume and Elizabeth Simpson appear to be (from FamilySearch):
William 1757 bap. Innerwick (mother named as Betty Simpson)
Agnes b. 1759 bap. Innerwick
William b. 1762 bap. Innerwick
Thomas b. 1766 bap. Innerwick
John b. 1768 bap. Innerwick
Elizabeth b. 1770 bap. Innerwick

So yes, there's more than a good chance Robert's father called William. A second daughter would have been named for Robert's mother but there's no baptism records for a second daughter. Elizabeth Simpson's parents are likely to have been Agnes and Thomas.

There is a baptism in 1725 at Dunbar East for Robert Hume, son of William Hume - no mother's name given. Would need rather more evidence before assuming it's the right Robert, though. And of course, going back to the 1700s not all baptisms that took place made it into the parish register, unfortunately, so there's a chance the baptism of your particular Robert Hume simply isn't in there. Same goes for marriages, which may be why you haven't found a marriage for Robert and Elizabeth.
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

Thank you everyone - I'll start another hunt with the information you gave me and check it against what I found myself.  Living at Thorntonloch, their local church would have been Innerwick.  I'm due back home in Scotland for another visit soon so might check out the burial records for the churchyard too as they can sometimes shed a bit of light.  Your time and efforts are much appreciated from "down under".   Thanks, Gillian
