Brighton Extra Mural Cemetery
« on: Monday 16 March 15 08:12 GMT (UK) »
I've jut discovered that there is a Grade 2 listed Mausoleum to the Ford Family at this Cemetery. I've found some picture on the net but was wondering is there are any inscriptions on/around it. Is there anyone in the area who could have a look for me please? It's situated 90m east of the Chapel.
Many thanks.

Hello Gwen,

I went and had a look at this structure yesterday, and yes it does have some inscriptions on it.
Carved into the arch above the entrance is "Erected by the owner Gerard Ford".
On one side panel is "Here rests the body of Gerard Ford" and describes him as of Lincoln's Inn Fields, London and Marine Parade Brighton as well as giving his Masonic honours.  I found online he was a solicitor d. 1889.
On the opposite side "Here rests the body of Joan Fanny widow of Gerard Ford" also with dates etc.

I may go back and get some pictures but there's a railing round it (with Masonic emblems in the metalwork though not in good condition) and it's not easy to get close up.

Hi John, I've only now seen your reply to my post - I was without my own laptop for some time and didn't receive notification to replies to my post's. If you do manage to get any pictures I would be most grateful as I was under the impression that there were more of the family buried there.
Many thanks,Gwen J

Hi John, Have started working on my Ford side of the family again and wondered if you still live near this cemetery?

Hello Gwen,
I can email you some photos if you give me an email address by personal message.
I went and had another look at the mausoleum.  There are definitely no other people named other than the husband and wife, although it was obviously built with panels that could have been used to name other people.

As I mentioned before, above the entrance
ERECTED BY THE OWNER GERARD FORD

On the panel on one side:

Here rests the body of
GERARD FORD
of Lincoln's Inn Fields, London
and Marine Parade, Brighton
Gentleman
He was born in London 20th May 1830
and died Brighton 28th September 1889
He was deputy Provincial Grand Master
of Sussex Masons under His Royal Highness
The Duke of Connaught.
He was Grand Superintendent of
Royal Arch Masons
and Provincial Grand Master Elect
of Mark Master Masons
Loyal, just and upright gentleman

On the opposite side:
Here rests the body of
JOAN FANNY
the wife of
GERARD FORD
of 8 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London
and 58 Marine Parade Brighton
She was born in Westminster 27th Feby 1844
and died at 8 Lincoln's Inn Fields 1st Feby 1885

There is a good picture here

although what I have called "the entrance" is the far side from the camera in this shot.
