Cannot Find William's Dad
« on: Monday 16 March 15 11:33 GMT (UK) »
I am stuck trying to find my 4XGrandfather's father.
William Knight was born circa 1776, believed in Hampshire as the family is all from the Southampton area. He married Racheal Chrisdee 12/10/1807 at Millbrook Paris Church.
1841 Census shows him living in College Road, in Parish of St Mary's a Last Maker aged 65.
His wife was baptised at St Faiths Church Havant. I thought I had found his father and his place of birth in the St Faith's parish records, but it turned out it was the wrong William. Any help ideas would be appriciated, living is Spain makes my research 'long range' until I return to UK for a summer holiday in July.

Assuming on the 1841 census his age was rounded up to 65, he could have been born 1778 +/- 2.

There are 10 in Hampshire that were baptised in that period on FindMyPast. Is there any way to narrow it down?

Hi Colin
Apologies for tardy reply, John & Phebe are out,got very excited when I found them, John was a wealth landowner his William inherited what would have been not too far short of 1million in today's money, my William was a lowly Last Maker, but, his wife, Rachel Chrisdee, was baptised at St Faiths  Havant, and it was this that lead me down the garden path! So my William's wife is from Havant, they were married at Millbrook, Southampton, the witnesses to the wedding appear to be friends, no Knights or CHrisdees, all this children were baptised at either St Mary's Southampton or the Above Bar Church, Southampton. I have spent hours and hours at the records office in Winchester and so far nothing. I have nothing to further narrow it down. Thanks for your efforts, and once again, sorrry for the late response.

On 1851 Census there is a William Knight, widower, who is a Shoemaker, shown as born Shalden, Hampshire.   I cannot find a William Knight, shoemaker, in 1841 so he could well be your 'Last Maker' who was involved in shoe making.

A William Knight was bap.25/10/1770 Shalden, son of John and Ann - this is the only William I can find there.

I note that there are death registrations in Southampton, William 1844 & Rachael 1846?

I could not find any baptisms for their children at St Mary's but 4 at All Bar Independent & 2 All Saints.
Rachael the first born 1809 & William second 1814 (The name of Rachael's parents).
