County Tyrone Place Name 1876
« on: Monday 16 March 15 11:39 GMT (UK) »
I have a Scottish Birth Certificate from 1877 in Glasgow for a child born to Thomas McSorley and Mary Ann McSorley nee McFadyen.
It gives their date and place of marriage as February 1876 in County Tyrone . I cannot make out the place name or trace any place name  resembling it. However it looks like Astroe  or Artroe . I understand the place name would have been phonetic as neither parent could write.
I would appreciate any assistance in this matter.

Hi,
I wonder if it might be the parish of Artrea in the Cookstown area or Arboe also in the Cookstown area.

Thanks for the swift reply. That certainly could be a contender . Would that be in Cookstown itself or the surrounding area?

Hi,
For Co.Tyrone parishes see map. http://www.ancestryireland.com/civil-parish-maps-for-ulster/civil-parishes-of-county-tyrone/ . The right-hand side of the map is basically the western shore line of Lough Neagh

I had a look for the marriage in the Irish statutory registers but can't see it listed.

I can't see a match for the marriage in Ireland either. It does sometimes happen that the parents make up a marriage date when registering a birth (especially if they haven't been married 9 moths before) but it would be worth checking for one in Scotland before and after the 1877 birthdate. Also, if they had other children check to see if their birth certificates list different information.

If the parents were alive in 1911 that census might list a more exact place than Ireland so that's also worth looking at.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I haven't seen the source document, but if the writing is really bad and/or is based on phonetic interpretation, my tuppenceworth would be, don't rule out the civil parish of Ardstraw to the far west of County Tyrone, bordering County Donegal.

McSorley is a common enough name in County Tyrone, but the only placename I can find in Griffiths Valuation with McSorleys that would come close to your placename is Ardstraw civil parish.

Griffiths Valuation has no McFaydens/McFadyens, but it has some McFaddens in both east and west Tyrone, but note that McFadden was a huge name in County Donegal.

Edited to add:  The only other thing I noticed trawling the internet was a reference to Mary Ann McSorley's parents being Dennis McFadyen and Isabella Gallacher, I don't know the basis for this, just to note that Griffiths Valuation has, for the whole of Ireland, one Denis McFadden in County Antrim, all of the rest of them in County Donegal.  I remain cynical, pending verification.

Many thanks to you all for your contributions and directions to helpful sites.
The couple had nine children in Glasgow between 1877 and 1895. Mary Ann died following birth of last child and I can find no trace of any of them in the 1901 census in Scotland.
Thomas went to sea as a stoker after 1895 and  served in WW1 (when aged in his 60's)All childrens  birth certificates state marriage in Astroe or Artrea , County Tyrone in February 1876.
Thomas gives place of birth as 6th March 1854 in County Tyrone in his merchant navy records.
I shall have a check in Scotland. McSorley parents were William McSorley and Nancy Cowley. McFadyen parents given as Dennis McFadden(sic) and Isabella Gallacher.
Once again many thanks for your assistance.
