Martha Garwood born abt 1785 possibly Suffolk
« on: Monday 16 March 15 16:33 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find parents / baptism of OH's ancestor Martha Garwood.

She married Samuel Ingate at Bungay on 1st Jan 1811. They had 6 children, Samuel, Rachel, Deborah, Hannah, John and Cornelius. Martha died in 1835, her year of birth calculated from age at death is about 1785. Samuel died the previous year.
They had their first child baptised in an Independent chapel in Bungay. Then they had him rebaptised with all siblings except Cornelius (because he hadn't been born yet) at the C of E church in Kirby Kane where they were living then. Cornelius got himself baptised as an adult, because his parents never got him baptised.

My thoughts are that Martha's family were non-conformists (the Ingates seem to be C of E) and the names of children may be significant.
Samuel's parents were William and Sarah and I believe that Sarah's father was Cornelius Bedingfield, so I think that's where the name comes from.

Martha was about 4 years older than Samuel and I did wonder if she might have been a widow. But Cornelius gave most of his children the middle name Garwood, which I doubt he would have done if it had only been his mother's first married name rather than her maiden name. He was only 4 when she died, so all his knowledge of her family would have been passed on by older siblings or his uncle and aunt who took him in when his parents died.

As the marriage was in Bungay I'm assuming she was from Suffolk, but it's close to the Norfolk border, so that's a possibility.

Any ideas, please?

The IGI
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi

has a Martha Garwood baptised 12 Mar 1787 father Jonothan Garwood at Metfield

might be worth checking.

Thank you. I had seen that but was a bit dubious because it was a submitted entry and there didn't seem to be any more Metfield Garwoods. But since then more records have come on line and there is a William Garwood born Metfield also abt 1787 living in Rumburgh on the 1851 census. His wife is called Deborah. The orphaned Deborah Ingate (Martha's daughter) lived in Rumburgh after her marriage and it was there that Cornelius was baptised as an adult, so I have always wondered if there was some of Martha's family there.
The iGI has baptism of a William on 11 Dec 1785 father also Jonathan. So he matches with the one on the census. So is it a coincidence that this William has a sister Martha of the right age, or is it our Martha?

I have found a marriage for a Jonathan Garwood and Mary Aldridge in Halesworth in 1785 (Boyd's index) but haven't been able to find any more detail.
But it is starting to look promising.

Now found two more Garwoods baptised in Metfield (John and Rachel) father Jonathan and mother mentioned as Mary Aldridge, so the marriage I found looks right.

Just need a definite connection between this family and my Martha.

Added: There is a second listing for John and Rachel only with father named, so perhaps the records with Mary Aldridge's name is someone just jumping to conclusions, having found the same marriage I did.

Also at Metfield:

John Aldrich singleman
Mary Mouser singlewoman
Both of this parish
Married by licence 12th July 1777
Witnesses Thomas Settle and Thos Hunter

John Aldrich - yeoman - buried 12th January 1785 aged 50 years

This may or may not be "your" Mary Aldrich, widow.  I couldn't see any Aldrich baptisms at Metfield between 1777 and 1785.

Thank you for the extra information. It does confirm that Martha Garwood was the daughter of Mary Aldridge (previously widowed). It is possible for her to have been born Mary Mouser. If Mary was relatively young ( 20-ish) when she married John Aldridge who would have been about 42 then.
Then she could have married Jonathan Garwood 2 months after JA's death and conceived William immediately or maybe William was on the way a bit earlier? In 1794 when James was born she could still be just under 40.

Looks like Metfield is the place to concentrate on now.
