Town or County?
« on: Tuesday 17 March 15 10:34 GMT (UK) »
In researching my partner's ancestry, I have found some Irish ancestors in London.

They are Mary Hunt b1803 and Robert Kyne b1801, who married in 11/2/1827, Old St Pancras Church (which isn't Catholic).

In the 1841 census, their places of birth are given as 'I' for both, 1851 expanded that to 'Ireland' for both).

By the 1861 Census (RG 9; Piece: 165; Folio: 59; Page: 56;) they were living at Russell Place, Bloomsbury, and (finally) the place of birth is given as "Ireland, County Boscommon"

However, I note (from looking at a map) that Roscommon is the name of both a town and a county.

But in 1861, place of birth is normally given as a town.

Can anyone advise wether they're (likely to be) from the town or the county?

If it says County Roscommon then it seems logical that they might have come from County Roscommon (which could include the town of Roscommon).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I wasn't sure how knowledgeable/trustworthy a London enumerator would be when dealing with Irish placenames.
