Thomas Otten/Aughton
« on: Tuesday 17 March 15 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
An entry for the birth and baptism of one of the children of Thomas and Margaret Otten states that Thomas my 4xg.grandfather was in the Limerick Militia, this was in 1813/1814, at the time he was residing in Culmstock, Devon.  He passed away in Culmstock in 1834 aged 59.  The 1851 census states that Margaret is 76 and was born in Limerick, Ireland.  Are there baptism or marriage records available and also are the any lists of men in the Limerick Militia.  Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Hi
Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you.
Have you got Margaret's maiden name?
was she Ann Margaret?
Sarah and Louisa were born in Culmstock,Devon,England, this is correct isn't it.
I know in those days they didn't enter the Mothers names (Christian and maiden) on birth records.
Where are you? (In the UK or overseas)

Hi again,
I do not have Margarets maiden name unfortunately, or any info on where Thomas and Margaret
were married.  The surname appears as Aughton, Otten and Orton, so I have tried checking out these plus Naughton  and Oughton.  I live close to Heathrow Airport and have today been  to The Records Office in Kew to where The Family History Centre is based at the moment and looked at film of Limerick marriages and baptisms (Thomas dies in 1834 aged 59 so I have been looking for baptism c1775, but no luck on any Thomas (sounds like any of  the above).
Regards

Hi,
I have been to Kew, a while ago now. I am in Wales, my sister lives outside Guildford.
Limerick Malitia records are in Kew, but I am not sure if they recorded the marriages or the births of children on them like they did in records after 1864.
I have searched England and Ireland but I would really need her maiden name.
If it states Limerick it could be either Limerick City or County Limerick.
If he was stationed in Limerick he could have been at any on the camps.
There is 1 record of a marriage in County Offaly (previously known as Kings County), just outside a town called Birr (previously Parsonstown) there was a big camp called Crinkle.
My relatives lived near there.
I have copied and pasted a record of a Thomas Haughton this is the only one by a close match.
Names were written how they sounded, so this may have been him.
Sorry, I don't seem to be much help.

Maggsie you have been an absolute star - I will try and follow this up next time I go to Kew.  Thank you so much for spending time on this.  Wales is close to my heart as this is where my dad was born.  He came from Cwmdare.
Best regards
