Please help me find my SMITH ancestors
« on: Tuesday 17 March 15 23:05 GMT (UK) »
I have not been able to find very much information on my Smith ancestors beyond the 1901 and 1911 census, and I would really really appreciate it if anyone could turn up any information on anyone below

In 1901 the family lives in Duke Street, Coppenhall Monks, Crewe, Cheshire:

Robert J Smith b.1862 Sevenoaks, Kent (coppersmith)
Louisa Smith b. 1865 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire
John A Smith b. 1891
Harry Smith b. 1894
Frances May Smith b. 1896
Annie Sophia Smith b. 1898
Thomas Smith b. 1900

1911

They live at 24 Lockitt Street, monks coppenhall, crewe and they have an additional child, Elizabeth born in 1908.

I think that they were married in Nantwich in 1890. I have been told by a family member that they may have moved to Manchester, this is where I know one of the children got married (in Chorlton upon Medlock).

I will be eternally grateful for your help as I am trying to help an elderly relative find out about what happened to his family. Many thanks

The 1890 marriage shows Louisa as Smith as well - see

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DFC-HY9

Have you looked for them on the 1871 and 1881 censuses - both are free here

A copy of the marriage cert should give you their respective fathers names to help tracing

www.cheshirebmd.org.uk shows the marriage as a civil marriage which means it cannot be looked up in parish records - you have to buy the certificate

In Manchester South there was a December Q 1925 marriage for

SMITH Annie S  (married Mr Newell) Manchester S  Volume 8d/ Page 224

Deaths in Manchester South for:
Death Mar 1936: SMITH  Robert J / aged 74    / Vol 8d /Page 73

There were two Louisa Smith deaths, one in Manchester & one in Manchester South :-

Death Dec 1938  /SMITH Louisa R / aged 74   / Manchester S./ Vol 8d/Page 8

Death Jun 1941  /Smith Louisa / age 76 / Manchester / Vol 8d /Page 550

I didn't look for the boys marriages as the weddings would have been in their bride's parish which could be anywhere.

Hi I at present cannot locate either on Freebmd or census a Robert J Smith b c 1862 Sevenoaks, Kent the 1901/11 seem to be the only occasions where he provides this pob, the one shown above I can track back quite easily to first census record, so would suggest purchase of the marriage certificate would provide more detail as to both couples parentage?
Or is the OP worried about what happened to the family from 1901/1911 only?

Hello,

thanks for all the replies. I ordered the marriage certificate, which names Robert John Smith's father as Jesse Smith. There isn't a father listed for Louisa Smith, would that mean that she doesn't know him? ???

It's usually an indication of illegitimacy
