help with immigration for Andrew Glew
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 04:35 GMT (UK) »
Andrew Glew/Glue came to Australia in the early 1850's, I have not been able to find any record of this event.
Andrew was born 1828 in Rogate, West Sussex, son of George Glew and Ann Martin
He married in Rylestone, Vic Aust in 1856 to Ellen Cattle , they had 12 children.
I have all of the records for this family and I would like to know when and what ship he came to Aust on, whether he paid his own way, or came on assisted passage.he was not a convict, maybe he came for the gold?
If any one can help I would be very thankful.

May I please ask for the info from his dc "how long in the colonies" as that may help determine his ship of arrival, and from that document, does the info there confirm his marriage, his children and his own origins?

Cheers, JM

Does the death certificate Andrew GLEW give "years in the colony"  ?

I am not seeing Rylestone in Victoria, but there are GLEWs to find Rylestone BDM NSW Index.

Ellen Ellen CATTLE married Andrew/Andrea GLEW in 1856 , registered Vic BDM #2131

There’s a submitted tree that shows this marriage was at Fryerstown,in 1856, BUT NO day/month (so I am wondering if they have actually obtained the BDM registration).

That same tree has Andrew’s death as 4 October 1893 at Footscray.

There is a death registered on the VIC BDM for 1890.  Andw GLEW aged 63, at Footscray, Victoria.  #15806.  Parents as Geo (GLEW) AND Ann MARTIN.

Cheers,  JM

I have had a good look through my offline resources, for NSW, particularly around Rylestone NSW in the 1860-1870s,  no sign of GLEW or GLUE as a family name in electoral rolls, directories, petitions, etc.

Back in 1999 the following was submitted to the First Families project:
http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/10421/20041220-0000/www.firstfamilies2001.net.au/firstfamily07b1.html?id=GLEW132314316

And the following was submitted to the same project but in 2001
http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/10421/20041220-0000/www.firstfamilies2001.net.au/firstfamily150b-2.html?id=GLEW1041383256

The link to the family history that JM gave cites a story that he was a ship's captain who jumped ship, then casts doubt on this because he had no family history of maritime service and was born at an inland village. They have given his DOB as the date of his baptism.
But now the Merchant seaman record has come to light it makes it more likely some truth in the family story of being on a ship's crew. It also gives his actual dob 4 July 1828. He seems to have joined the merchant navy at 16 and been ticketed at 17. Voyages in 1845, '46 and '47 are recorded.
I doubt if the captain of a ship would "Jump" ship. If he arrived in Australia in about 1852 - 54 he would be  24 - 26 which seems a bit young to be a captain, but with 7 to 9 years service could have worked his way up the ladder a bit. I have heard that crew were often taken on for a single voyage not necessarily the return trip. Perhaps he was paid off at the end of his journey over to Australia and instead of looking for a passage home, he decided to stay in the chance of making his fortune in the gold rush.
So it looks more probable he came to Australia as ship's crew rather than as a fare paying passenger (assisted or otherwise).
