William Otterson, Royal Irish Constabulary records
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 15:10 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for information on William Otterson, born 1840 in County Down. He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary at age of 18 on 14 Apr 1858, and stationed in Kildare. Service #23120. This is all I could find online.

Any information is most appreciated.

In the court records on FindMyPast there are references to a
William OTTERSON in Rathangan and Glenaree from 1859 to 1861 as a sub-constable
and from 1863-1864 as William OUTERSON in Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny

As a constable I would expect that he would have been called to court and turn up in further records (bearing in mind he may have moved to somewhere not yet online)

Link to RIC site re records in Kew

He is not obviously on the 1901 census as his name or initials aged c61

He shows up on this link. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/down/military/down-ric-1858.txt
and his service number is  23120    which should help you find his service record in Kew.

If he was 18 then his father was also in the RIC and possible his brothers, but his father will not have come from here so if you are trying to go back further you will need the fathers place of birth.  You had to be aged between 19 and 27 to join the RIC unless your father was already in it.  They were also not allow to marry until they had 7 years of service so that they could provide for their wife.  hope this is of some use to you
