Samuel James Newton born 1871/1872 St Erth
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 20:17 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find what happened Samuel James Newton born  abt  1871 at St Erth after 1911.
Samuel married Gertrude Mannell  and  they had five children. In 1901 the family are living in the Praze area.
The  1911 census have  S J Newton born Falmouth 1874 (using her husband’s initials) living in Camborne, Cornwall  with her 5 children but no sign of her husband and she states that she is married.
July 1920 shows, who I believe to be, Samuel the elder’s son Samuel James  (born 1901) age 18 and a blacksmith, going to his father Mr S J Newton whose address was 9126,Brandon Avenue, S Chicago ,Ill. Samuel the younger has his mother’s address as Camborne,Cornwall.
I can’t find Samuel the elder’s emigration record and would like to know where he disappeared to.

There's naturalization papers 16th April 1920, for Samuel James Newton, 9126 Brandon Ave, date of birth 30th August 1871. It says he arrived in USA on 6th August 1904.

Thanks-you for those replies.
Is there any other information on the naturalisation papers?
I have found Samuel's wife's death in Sept qtr 1934 in the Redruth district, Cornwall, so it seems odd to see a naturalistation for Samuel unless he left his wife.
In 1920 there is a Newton but no Christian name or age and he is a lodger. The address is Chicago Ward 2, Cook, Illinois, United States .
I can't find Samuel the elder in the 1920 census even though Samuel the younger was visiting him.
Another son called Thomas born 1895 is going to see his father S J Newton in March 1920. The address this time is General Delivery,So, Chicago,P.O;Ill. Thomas's last address was Camborne where his mother was living at that time.

Here's the information from the naturalization index that was mentioned above - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XKGJ-BHQ - but the middle name appears to be Jones or Jonas.

A naturalization of the younger Samuel seems to be on this index - http://www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org/NR/about.aspx

Thanks shellesq.
I wonder if someone had misheard and wrote Jonas/Jones. So many things point to them being father and son.

Samuel Newton (a 32yo Fitter) arrived, alone, in New York on the 30 July 1904, aboard the S.S. Philadelphia.

He had $140 in cash on him and gave his last residence as Cornwall and his future residence as the "Star Hotel".

The ship's manifest has no more information.
