I'm trying without success to post a cutting from from the Dundee Forfar and Perth People's Journal, 7th May 1881 which should answer your questions....

Oh I give up - TEN efforts and it won't attach

Thank you so much for your efforts to post this cutting - all I knew in the family was that he had met with a horrible accident, leaving eight children orphaned , but did not know the circumstances. Appreciate your help so much!

An interesting article, but it does not give cause of death. If you buy a few credits on Scotland's People and download the death certificate this may clarify. You may find an RCE with further information if the death was suspicious.

Death record states "WHEN AND WHERE DIED: 1881. Went missing 29th March and found dead on  30th April on river Tay at Flukie fishing station, parish of Kinfauns". :CAUSE OF DEATH: drowning"

There is no RCE and all his effects were seemingly found on him when his body was recovered from the Tay. Death by drowning but the circumstances remain a mystery.

In a case of this nature it would be rare for a Fatal Accident Inquiry to be held. This would be even less likely if it were to involve a sheriff ultimately requiring to determine whether a prominent member of court staff had taken his own life, when the consequences of such a decision would affect his family.

Regardless of where the truth lay all those years ago, it must have been better for all concerned to have it described as a tragic accident.
