Jane and Eliza DANIELS
« on: Thursday 19 March 15 10:15 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning - another morning, another problem.

I am trying to research two daughters of Charles Daniels and Eliza Game.

Jane was baptised 24 January 1858 at st Barnabas in Hornsey, having been born according to the baptismal record 29 Dec 1857. She apparently had a short life, dying I believe in 1859 (Q1 1859 St Geo 1c 310), though short of purchasing the certificate I have no proof that this death record is actually for Jane. More problematically I can't find an entry in the BMD for her birth, which I assume would have been Q1 1858.

Eliza is also a problem. Once again I have a baptismal record for her showing her to have been baptised on 29 Sept 1861 at St John's in Islington. Once again I can't find an an entry in the BMD for her birth. I believe that she went on to marry William Rowland Penlington (1855-1923), a bricklayer. As far as I can see, the couple were living as man and wife at 29 Oswald Street in Hackney in 1891, and went on to have 9 children. Again I cannot find a BMD reference for their marriage.

All help towards resolving these mysteries would be gratefully received.

I suppose it could be, but I would be surprised by Southwark. All her siblings were born in the Islington area.

Here is the baptism record - it is the right family given the address.

Are all the other children registered in Islington and in a timely fashion?

What district were the family living in 1861?
Sorry am not that familiar with London districts.

The family name is DANIELS, though I have over the years seen DANIEL, DANIELL and DANIELLS.

And yes, all the children were registered as you would expect: the early ones in Edmonton, then Hackney but mostly Islington. There are two contentious ones: Ellen Q2 1853 in Dartford, if indeed that is her, and Emma Q2 1869 St Geo or Q1 1869 Pancras.

Its hard to be sure without ordering certificates. I was hoping to narrow things down before ordering certificates, as it can become very expensive. GRO rules are not very flexible. You have to specify the registration area.

In 1861 they are at Red Cap Cottages in Islington.

Hi

You can also specify that it has to be a certain father and/or mother and if it's not, then they'll refund you.

Answer the question Is the GRO Index Reference Number known?

with "No" and take it from there

Obviously, you'd expect it to take a bit longer than a standard search.
