It seems now though that there are two possible sets of parents (and two birth years, 1891 and 1900) for Joseph Brown. One is William and Sarah Jane, the other is Margaret A Brown and her husband with whom she had five children in the 1890's of whom a Joseph was the youngest, but who had died by the time of the 1901 census where she's living in Winlaton.

Are you saying we might be looking at the wrong family?

You need to firmly establish Joseph's parentage before doing anything else.

Yes, sorry, it's looking that way. This is a useful lesson for me as I now realise that family trees posted on Ancestry aren't always the right starting point for a search. I'd begun by searching for my wife's grandfather's name which is quite unique. Two individuals have put trees up with him in, one naming William and Sarah Jane as his grandparents, the other Margaret A Brown. Sincere apologies if it turns out people have been looking at the wrong Browns for me.

It's Keith Temple Brown. I can only think of Bristol Temple Meads that also has Temple in the middle!

Keith was born 9 Feb 1928 in Ryton, Durham.

A Joseph Brown married an Annie Graham in Gateshead in in 1919. The Lanchester marriage is Margaret Graham to a Joseph Brown. Obviously there were a lot of Browns in Newcastle at the time so whether these Browns (or even Graham's are related or not I'm not sure).

If this is our (well, my wife's) Joseph and Annie she can only have been 14 and if that's the case one would have to hope that her husband was the Joseph born 1900 rather than the one born 1891!

More digging to do!

Presumably you have his birth certificate which gives you his mother's maiden name?
