Brigit A. Melvin from Co. Mayo
« on: Saturday 21 March 15 09:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have been researching my maiden name,  "Welsh"  and have traced it back to Michael and Bridget Welsh who were living in York with their family. They were born in Co Mayo, married in Liverpool in 1861 and were in York UK. in 1871.  I know in the 1891 Census that Michael had died and Bridget was the head of the family working as an Innkeeper, her mother, then 74, Bridget A Melvin was living with them.

I can't find any information about Bridget or her husband and wondered if there was a record of her with her husband and family in Co Mayo. I think she would have been born around 1817.

I would love any help with this,

Thank you,
Liz

Hi
Could this be Bridget junior's  baptism catholic church  Kilmoremoy Mayo Ireland
Bridget Melvin born 22nd May 1836 bapt 23rd daughter of Tom Melvin and Bridget Ginty from Brook
God parents William and Mary Reynolds

Does that fit with the father's name on her marriage?

The Irish tithe records have a Tom Melvin Knockerrello township Kilmoremoy in 1834.

Hi,
Yes, it says their address was Brook.
There are also Melvin's in County Sligo.
Just up the road really!

Hi to my lovely helpers again. I have returned for help after hitting a wall.

I know now, that the name Melvin, which we have handed down as a second name in all generations since Tom, has come from him, great news! My brother now knows why his second name is Melvin, but  I can't find any more information about Tom Melvin himself.

I can't find his birth or any census information that will give me a picture of him. I think he was born around 1817, but that is not certain. As his daughter Bridget was christened at Brook, he can't have been far away. Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.  :)
