« on: Sunday 22 March 15 13:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks,

I have tried to locate an address for a Mary Russell, the address was given on her marriage cert. in 1908. The address being Villa Valetta, Forteath Avenue, Elgin. I would like to find the house if it is still there or indeed at least where it was located withing the area,
Thanks,

Unknownmale.

I couldn't find Villa Valetta, but Forteath Avenue in Elgin, Moray, still exists. Do you perhaps know what number Villa Valetta was? Have you got the 1901 or 1911 census for your ancestor? If they're living at the same address, then if you look on the actual census image, it will tell you the houses next to it, and you could perhaps identify which number house from there.

LIBINDX http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp lists the sale of Vil(l)a Valletta, Forteath Avenue, by Mrs Sarah Ferguson, from the Northern Scot of 20 February 1909.

Forteath Avenue is mostly Victorian villas. It is not listed in the 1881 census, so I deduce that it dates from after 1881. I would be surprised if Villa Val(l)etta doesn't still exist, though it could have had its name changed.

The Northern Scot doesn't give the house number in Forteath Avenue, but the sasine recording the transfer of ownership would tell you exactly where it is/was. The sasine will be in the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh, and you would either have to order it or get someone to find it on your behalf. See http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/

Alternatively it is possible that one of the Valuation Rolls available at Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk might list the house by both name and number. Failing that, the VR should list the names of all the houses in the street, and by making a note of the adjacent ones it might be possible to home in on Villa Val(l)etta.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi

Can't help much but try looking on here.

Place the 1904 OS map of Elgin over the map and zoom in. Forteith Avenue is on there in 1904, there doesn't look to be that many houses on there.
