Closed-Boughton under Blean or maybe Dunkirk
« on: Sunday 22 March 15 16:02 GMT (UK) »
In the 1911 census I have a relative's address given as "3 Woodside Cottages, Horselees Road, Dunkirk, Kent." might anyone know where their home was on what appears to be a long lane with many plots of named woodlands beside it.

In previous census entries he's been shown as a thatcher and a hurdle maker so a rural location for him isn't a surprise.

Any thoughts are most welcome.

Hi

Try looking at this map of Dunkirk/ Boughton under Blean from 1898. The lower half of the map shows Boughton and Dunkirk, and a small area called 'HORSELEES' with lots of 'W's plotted on it.

Have looked on a modern map and Horselees Road is there on this link

It isn't labelled on the map below but if you find Colonels Lane on there and follow it into Horselees that Lane is what you are looking for

Here is a revised map from 1906 (published 1933) showing the same area, with the addition of a Woodmans Hall.

Claire,
Thank you for those links. I had just gone to page one of the 1881 census and found Woodman's Hall cited as the starting point of the enumerator's round. You've saved me a further question.

Happy hunting

Hi canuc.
Just stumbled across your post re Dunkirk Boughton. I have lived there for the past 20 years.Horselees road is at the bottom of Boughton hill,at the top of the hill is Dunkirk. the Woodmans Hall was a pub,but recently been knocked down to make way for houses.  I go there once a week to visit my mum, I can have a drive down horseless road and have a look for you, just let me know if I can be of any help, I know what it is like trying to get info from years ago as I myself are doing my family tree in Norfolk.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Carol .
