1871 census - Peter Street, Eccleston St Helens
« on: Monday 23 March 15 09:13 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know what happened to the 1871 census images in Peter Street, they seem almost faded away to nothing? I checked the street on FindMyPast to see who was living there and only the odd word was legible.

Has anyone access to the films of the originals? I'm too far away to do it myself:-)

These are the original microfilms made by the Public record Office (National Archives). The original documents are produced only rarely when they are impossible to read on film, and this can only be done at the Kew reading rooms of the TNA

 >:(  pity.

I was thinking along the lines of census CD's. I have NBL and DUR on CDs but nothing for Lancs. but maybe their quality would be poor too.

Nothing much to be done if the original is damaged or very faint.... I sometimes flick between Ancestry and FindMyPast census pages, finding one might be more legible than the other.

Not having an address search on Ancestry, I couldn't find the same pages.......... but the FindMyPast image did have a folio? number so possibly a route there?????

Ancestry and Find My Past both use the microfilms made by the Public record Office, so there will be no difference.

Is St Helens Connect a Pay2View site?

My 3xg grandfather was the enumerator for the 1841 Newburn census and I thought he'd made a mess of it until I looked at it on the rival site and found I could read it! So there are differences sometimes.

Thank you Stan for your help in this problem. Can you tell me the Ancestry.com census ref. for Peter St on the 1871 census?
