Pre 1903 Marriage Certificate
« on: Monday 23 March 15 13:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to find the names of my great grandfathers parents. His name is Joseph Geraghty born about 1867 in Louth. He married Mary Gore in 1893 but have not been able to find the church record of the marriage online. I have however found their names in the civil index so I though I would order the certificate online to see if it confirms who his father is.
I went onto the GRO website but it states that Marriage certificates are only available from 1903 onwards. I thought certificates would be available from 1864 onwards. Do these certificates still exist? If they do exist are they obtainable?

Thanks.
Darren.

It should be available.  If you are applying to the GRO in Roscommon, be sure to order a research certificate, which is just a photocopy of the record and contains all the necessary detail, it costs €4.

Order it here by downloading the relevant marriage form (tick photocopy):

http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

Be sure to write somewhere on the form the names, the quarter, the district, the volume number and the page number.  Include your email address to receive it that way.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I thought it should be available but the GRO website is a little vague, maybe it's just online applications that are post 1903. I didn't know about the research certificates so thanks, you've saved me some money.

I have all the details for volume and page number so I'll download the form and post it off and let everyone know the outcome.

Thanks again.
Darren.

Hello again,

In case anyone else is interested, there was no problem and I received an email with the details I needed. For the record Joseph Geraghty married Mary Gore on 10th of Feb 1893 in Darver Co Louth. Joseph's father is listed as John Geraghty and Mary's father was Alexander Gore.

Darren.

Thanks Dathai

Yes the records you link to are part of my tree. Alexander Gore married Margaret Murphy(haven't found date yet), both were from Dublin. They had four children; William, James, Mary & Margaret, all born in Louth. I don't know much more about Margaret Murphy apart from that she died in 1917. With such a common name I doubt I'll find any further back on her side.
As for Alexander Gore I know he died in 1903, I haven't found much more about him yet but I am hopeful as the name is less common.
The William Gore death you link to is I reckon the one from my tree. Could be a coincidence but everything matches and he doesn't appear on any other Irish records.

Thanks for the info.
Darren
