Where is Houghswood?
« on: Monday 23 March 15 13:14 GMT (UK) »

I'm helping a friend with her family tree circa 1760, Baptismal records for St Leonard's Middleton give the residence place of the parents as Houghswood. Does anyone know roughly where it was so I can either add it or eliminate the records from her tree?

Thanks Margaret

There is a Hough Farm just over 2 miles north-east of Middleton. A little further out from that, heading towards the Royton area,  is 'Ooze Wood'  Could Houghswood be a variant of Ooze Wood?

Ooze Wood and Hough Farm are both on an 1848 map on the Old Maps site, but they don't have anything earlier than that.

Thanks Barbara you could be right. I needed to link it to Thornham and it does. I spotted that map but I was looking more around Thornham Old Lane and the plantations not further down towards Royton.

Thanks once again I really appreciate it.
