Truro - June 1854 - marriage cert (Susan Wilkins & Charles Woodham)
« on: Monday 23 March 15 23:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello experts,

I'm wondering if anyone is in a position to examine a marriage certificate for the above-mentioned couple. In particular I am looking for any clue that might reveal which part of the country Susan comes from. My info from NZ has her year-of-birth at 1835/36, if that helps.

Thanks
David C

Hi

Marriage certs do not show place of birth.  To lookup a marriage in the parish records you have to know which church it took place in.

The Truro registration district covered a lot of areas

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/truro.html

I can't see an 1861/71 entry for them - did they emigrate before then?
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi CaroleW,

(1)
This couple emigrated in 1859. I have the details of their journey.

(2)
unfortunately, all I have for a marriage location at present is what FreeBMD has provided, which is simply 'Truro'. Perhaps it may be possible to identify a specific parish by some other means?

(3)
There are about half a dozen possible families for Susan Wilkins across the UK, in the censuses for 1841/51. If the marriage cert identifies her parents by name, it should be possible to match those names with a family in one of the censuses.

Therefore the task at hand now is to find which parish the wedding took place in.

In the first place, in England & Wales, it is not possible to see a marriage certificate unless you purchase a copy! That's the law!! ::)

I checked Cornwall OPC Database, but the marriage isn't there.
Meaning that it's not been transcribed. Maybe a Register Office wedding?

So it looks like you will need to pay £9.25!

The marriage certificate will name her father, but not her mother.

An on-line site gives her place of birth as West Lavington, Wiltshire, 1832. Charles is shown as born 13 Sept 1829, Easton Royal, Wiltshire.

Family search has the baptism of a Susanna Wilkins at West Lavington on 6 November, 1831, daughter of James and Anne.

Have just realised that I have been looking at your site!

The marriage certificate is a must. You will at least have her father's name and, just possibly, her stated age.

thanks, friends,

I concede that buying the cert is the only way to proceed with this matter.
Thanks for clarifying.

Brentor boy,
The West Lavington Susan Wilkins listed on my GENI site looked like a good fit until I discovered yesterday (from a Wiltshire OPC) that she was still living there, unmarried in 1857, which is incompatible with MY Susan Wilkins marrying in 1854. That's what provoked me to throw the question over to the experts in Rootschat last night.

Thanks folks.
