This one looks like a painting rather than photo. An overpainted photo perhaps?

Hi,
James Tulley,  according to a 1862 directory of Sheffield, was a photographer at 26 Division Street. He was involved with the  Sheffield photographic society in 1864/5.

Could be late 1850's -  early 1860's.

Hi Ruskie

I really don't know, it's like the one of the chap I posted the other day which also looks like sketch rather than photo, but when you look at her hands etc, it does look more like a painting/drawing doesn't it, as in the proportions don't seem quite right.

Hi Fiddlerslass

Thank you for researching that for me.  I have a couple more by Tulley which are much later, and it seems he was around for quite awhile.  It's interesting to see how the cards have changed from this early one of his.  One I have says "established twenty years" so if I can find out the date he first started, it's going to make these later ones easy to date!   :)

The more I look at this the less like a photograph it looks.  :-\ And you are right - the proportions seem wrong.

I think it's a photograph of a drawing taken 1860's, but the drawing? is from the early 1850's. Have to wait for one of the experts to see your Thread for definitive answer. Sleeve design and remnant of curled hair design from the 1840's and before.

I have had my original Victorian era photographs copied with an SLR. The originals are in frames and I don't want to take them out and scanning them.
