Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I would say you have the right John Waddell in the 1851 census going by the family you have mentioned and this is a different John Waddell married to Rachel Mackay in 1847..Perhaps there is 2 John Waddell's marrying Janet Cleland  I have had this problem with my 3 set of Grandparents 2 lots of Anne Anderson's marrying Alexexander Forbes's and in the same place  ???
