Sir Bernard Vidal Shaw - Born Where?
« on: Wednesday 25 March 15 16:33 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a linked (by not related) ancestor Bernard Vidal Shaw. He married Mrs. Katherine Ciceley Creasy, a World War I widow, in Kisumo, Kenya, 23 December 1929. Katherine's maiden name was Colls.

The sun never set on Bernard's governmental postings. He was everywhere! His birth date is 28 April 1891 and he died Fulham, London 26 May 1984 but I cannot find a birth place.

Bernard Vidal Shaw Senior died 10 January 1932, South Kensington, London. Administration to Gertrude Wynne Shaw, widow. Thank you Gertrude for being so American with your name. I am now thinking that Bernard and Gertrude hopped on a boat for somewhere exotic (British) for Bernard's employment and Bernard Vidal Jnr. was born there! At least I am a little closer with all of your help. From a site on the Internet I found that he was 25 years in British Guiana, and he was believed to be there in 1891 which corresponds to Bernard Junior's birth. The Ship's Manifest in 1914 confirms that. No wonder the family is not in English Censuses. Not surprising that Bernard Junior has little evidence of being in England.

1881Census Southwark, London.
Eyre Massey Shaw Chief of Fire Brigade, son Bernard Vidal Shaw [Senior], 23. This Bernard Vidal Shaw married Gertrude Wynne Cole or Dallas [possibly a widow] December Qtr. 1889, Kensington, London.

Eyre Massey Shaw, Grandson of the Chief of Fire Brigade, died of wounds, 30 July 1916. Commonwealth War Graves Commission site gives parents as Bernard Vidal Shaw [Senior] and Gertrude Wynne Shaw. 1911 Census this Grandson is at boarding school, age 15, in Hammersmith, London. Birthplace British Guiana.

1951/1952 Electoral Rolls, 50 Hornton Street, Kensington, London, 3 Shaws living in the same house
Bernard V. Shaw [Junior]
[Son of] Gertrude W. Shaw [Widow]
[Husband of] Katherine C. Shaw

Gertrude Wynne Shaw died 8 June 1954. Will to Bernard Vidal Shaw, Retired Official of Colonial Legal Service.

It looks likely that the Junior Bernard Vidal Shaw as well as his soldier brother were both born in British Guiana but further research is needed.
