Thanks for all the replies.

It was really details about the ship the 'Mary Ann', where it was going / coming, and how it sank etc  that I was wanting, and I still haven't got that !

I will see what the FindMyPast entry gives me.  Then give up !

I can't find anything about it on the internet, it might be that is was only a small ship so the details haven't been recorded anywhere.

the last number of 1868 is a clear two o's on top of each other !

To me it seems clear that the bottom "o" at least is not a closed loop.

According to this report http://tinyurl.com/pkl389w
there were 4 deaths in the 1868 Mary Ann explosion ( which was in March, not August) : Capt Marshall, his wife and two crewmen. Two names are listed in the register of wages and effects of deceased  seamen as having perished in this explosion: they are Smith and Bundy. The article also mentions the mate, who was Marshall's son-in-law, as having been very badly injured.

Nothing more in the report I find I'm afraid. It looks like one step forward, one back doesn't it?

Back to the 1863 Mary Ann loss: there was a ship of that name that departed Portland, Maine for Liverpool on 12th February 1863 and went missing. The master was Pritchard, and the ship was operated by Freer, Boyd & Co.
