Looking for Thomas Finnerty and Mary Gately origins
« on: Thursday 26 March 15 16:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm at a point where I've exhausted my resources to finding ancestors.  I've been at this for about 5 years and have narrowed down as much as exists of their lives in the US.  I'm traveling to Ireland this summer and would love to figure out where they came from.

what I know is Thomas Finnerty, Finnity, Finerty DOB @1827 and wife Mary Gately DOB 1830 immigrated to US @ 1852 with infant daughter DOB I believe 1850 or 51.  I believe Mary Gately Finnerty's parents to be John and Margaret Tully based on a death certificate which I have not verified to be her yet but I think it is.  Everything I have come across just states Ireland as birthplace.  There other children appear to have been born in the US.  I'd hoped an obituary would have more information but have not found them.  I've gone through every online database I can find and either there is too much to narrow down like in Griffiths or there is nothing.

Any help or direction would be most appreciated.

Just on off chance that they might have been in Ireland on either 1901/1911 Census night there are 2 US born ones here... http://www.rootschat.com/links/01f0w/

Thanks but I'm pretty sure they were already dead by then.  I think Mary died in US in 1880 and Thomas died in US 1885.  1880 census shows them born in Ireland immigrated in 1852.  I do have their daughter Mary's death certificate just states born in Ireland.

I know they'd be dead by then and that you obviously haven't even looked to see if these MIGHT be grandchildren....

I actually have spent considerable time trying to trace other grandchildren but the only line I can trace is the line to my family which is why I am reaching out and hoping to find something from before they came here. I've even traced a neighbor in hopes that they came from the same town but no luck there either.

Of course they might be grandchildren but I can't see how to connect them to mine with out filling in the gap after 1880.

I have tried the Irishtimes and many spellings as well as rootsireland.ie, I have a subscription as well as ancestry.com  Thanks
