This court case lists George Drant's children as Mary, Susanna, Sarah, Margaret, William, and George http://tinyurl.com/pejmwt9

So is that Mary Appleton Drant perhaps?

So is that Mary Appleton Drant perhaps?

It also mentions his friend "Thomas Kennington".  :)

(BTW, I'm away from email and the 'net for the rest of the afternoon, so if you post more good
of your excellent stuff, and I don't respond, that'll be the reason.)

William Drant baptised 1801, parents George and Elizabeth https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N15W-XHN

There's also a marriage of a George Drant and Elizabeth Stephenson at Holy Trinity in 1813 - a bit late and according to the transcription that George was aged only 22   https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXCK-D4X

That court case is golden;

http://tinyurl.com/pejmwt9

It certainly sits well with our rich George Drant, "Gent". There's enough money in the will to be worth going to court over.

It also confirms that "this" George Drant is the father of the Susannah and Sarah Ann Drant who are living with ("his friend") Thomas Kennington in the 1841 census.

And the will date "17 Mar 1831" predates (by just a little) the death notice "10 May 1831".

If we consequently believe that the will and death relate to the same person, we've finally linked our "rich" George Drant and our "Tallow Chadler" George Drant to be one and the same person.

There do appear to be multiple Drant famlies knocking about to confuse matters.

So if we're taking the death notice to be "the right one", 1781 is the DOB, and leads to:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NG52-MHK

Name:    George Drant
Gender:    Male
Christening Date:    08 Jan 1781
Christening Place:    SALTFLEETBY ALL SAINTS,LINCOLN,ENGLAND
Father's Name:    John Drant
Mother's Name:    Mary

Re that 1813 Drant/Stephenson marriage I think it was probably John Drant rather than George https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N2JW-52W
FindMyPast has a transcribed marriage license for that one

John Drant was a hairdresser and perfumer, declared bankrupt in 1825.
(info from trade directories and the BNA).

Back to George Drant.

I have an explaination of how a Tallow Chandler and a "Gent" can be the same person.

In 1813 he was offering 60-80 TONS of soap ash for sale (BNA again), so I think he was tallow-chandler-ing on the grandest of scales, not making a few candles!

Reviewing my data, I note that the only evidence I have for the Ann Drant/Thomas Kennington marriage in 1809 Grimsby is Pallot's Marriage Index, which is pretty thin gruel as evidence goes.

Does anyone have more detailed/original info that this?

Given the period, my best hope for extra info are the witness names (although occupations and parish information, in fact ANYTHING would be welcome).
