Date Please - Nurse - C46
« on: Friday 27 March 15 12:55 GMT (UK) »
I don't know if we can track this down precisely from the uniform, but I thought it's worth posting.

Also can anyone read her name?

Thanks Hepburn, I'd agree with that.  Yes, I'm sure she made the male patients eyes light up when she walked onto the ward!  ;D

The photo style is reminiscent of the "cinema photograph" which became popular in the 1920's.
I'm not sure if she's wearing a medal ribbon which may indicate she served in WW1 or it could be a nursing long service ribbon.

So sorry for the late response Jim, been a bit sidetracked!

Thanks heaps for the description. It's quite a glamorous photo IMO.

I've tried to find information on the stripes on her uniform, does this indicate her nurse's rank do you know?  I've had a search but drawn a blank.

Could be Sarah, but I would have thought it more usual to write a christian name.  Not sure really.  Wish they had written on the back though, spoils the original!

You need an expert on nursing history. I'm guessing it's long service/good conduct or similar.
If she was a ward sister I would have thought she'd have a different uniform rather than 2 bars as nursing was still run pretty much on military lines as per Florence Nightingale's handbook on nursing.

I think she could be a WW1 VAD nurse Caz and the stripes could be efficiency stripes....have a look at the Scarletfinders web site Caz....there are a lot of photos and info on nurses on there....a site I have used for info for exhibitions.
I also think the name could be Parry.
