Clock & watch maker & lock makers in the 1800's
« on: Saturday 28 March 15 12:13 GMT (UK) »
???  This may sound a silly question to ask but would it have been Likely at all for a man who was known to have been a watch & clock maker to also have made locks too or would they have been two completely separate occupations not likely to have been carried out by the same man?

Hi there
Firstly there is no such thing as a "silly question".

In the 19th century clockmakers very often bought in their movements and components so it is quite possible that someone could have been a locksmith and a clockmaker.

If you go back much earlier, say to the early 1700s, clockmakers often developed from craftsmen such as blacksmiths and locksmiths.

Hope that helps.
