Baptisms for GILES family of Bath
« on: Monday 30 March 15 20:40 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather Thomas Ricketts GILES was born in Cleveland Place East, Bath in 1858 his sister Emily was born in Bath in 1861 but they were living in Victoria Buildings at the time of the 1861 census.  She was 1 month old, so I assume she was born there.  Brother William was born 1863 Bath but I don't know where exactly.  The family had moved to Shepton Mallet by April 1865 as their 4th child was born there.

I cannot find a baptism for any one of them which is surprising.  Which church is the most likely one to have been used for the baptims.  Their parents John and Elizabeth married in a Baptist Church in Wiltshire, so this may have a bearing on their faith.

Can anyone  help please.

Elizabeth

Thanks Chris for the info.

That confirms my previous notes which unfortunately, I could not read.  This probably means that they would have used the church of St Michael and All Angels for the baptisms of their children.  I don't think the register for the period I am interested in is online yet.

Thanks for your help.

Hi
They were all born in different places in Bath
Thomas Ricketts Giles was born 1858 Walcot Bath
Emily Eliza Giles Born 1861 Abbey Ward Bath
William John Born 1863 Twerton Bath

I looked for a marriage at BTh  but not there so I tried Wiltshire
There was a John Giles married 1856 Trowbridge Register Office
Not sure if this is who you are looking for.
Kind regards Chris

Hi Liz
I have found them in two census
The first one they all live at Twerton
The second one they have moved to live in Bedminster Bristol
But little Emily is missing.
It says in the census
That John Giles born 1832 East Hansay Berkshire
Eliza Ricketts born1836 Bradford on Avon Wiltshire
I will see if I can find out what happened to little Emily maybe she died.
Regards Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for taking the time to look for information on the Giles family.

Emily died in 1875 registered in Bedminster.  I think they were living in Bushy Park, Knowle by this time and her burial may well be at the church of the Holy Nativity in Knowle which was very close.

I  have the marriage cert for John & Elizabeth's marriage which took place in Melksham and I  have details of John's early years in East Hanney, Berks.  It is the later years that I am stuck on.  I have Thomas's registered birth certificate (or similar) but not the baptisms of him and his siblings.

The family seemed to  move about quite a bit but that could have been due to John's occupation of cheese factor or commercial traveller in the provisions trade.

It's ironical that the family walked the same streets as I did as a youngster and I had no idea my ancestors had lived so close to my home.

It is possible that none of the children were ever baptised but I would be very surprised if this was the case as they were a middle class family.

Thanks again,
Elizabeth

Baptist churches tend to only believe in adult baptisms, and rarely have infant baptisms? ::)
That's probably why you can't find them ;D

So you are going to need Birth Certificates, rather than baptism entries.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for keeping up the interest.  I have the 1911 census for Thomas along with his birth registration, his marriage details and death certificate.  It really is just his baptism record I am after. I have lots of photographs of him too with my mother as she spent quite a lot of time with her grandparents after her father (only son of Thomas) was drowned in 1918.

Thanks again for your help.
