Helen stewart/Robert Alison St Cyrus
« on: Tuesday 31 March 15 18:27 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any info on a Robert Alison and a Helen Stewart, they had a child named William Alison who was born about 1797 in St Cyrus, Scotland. Any info would be appreciated

Scott

Hi Scott,

No records are showing with the names you’ve given, although there is one for a marriage between Robert Alison and NELL Stewart, 25 March 1797 Inverkeithing, Fife.  (Nell is a variant of Helen)  And one for their son, William, who was born 5th Jan & baptised 14 Jan 1798 also Inverkeithing.

You can download images of the Parish Register entries for both records from:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

This looks like William in 1851.  Could he be your man?

Kincardineshire, St Cyrus Village
William Alison 54 Salmon Fisher born Inverkeithing
Betsy Alison 50 born Inverkeithing
Helen Alison 10 *
David Alison 8 *
Ann Alison 3 *
* born St Cyrus

Hello  :)

Thank you for this information, yes I believe that that is my William in the 1851 census living with his wife Betsy. The marriage could well be his parents marriage though because like you said Nell is a nickname for Helen

Thank you

Scott

Ah, have just noted that I've duplicated Ev's previous work on this family!  Never mind, at least we've both come up with the same thoughts.  I should have read your other thread before posting.  :-\

I purchased William Alison's death certificate a while ago and it has Robert Alison and Helen Stewart as his parents but I can't really find much on them after that.

I can't seem to find anything for Williams wife Betsy either, I have her death certificate too so I know the names of both of her parents, I wondering if maybe they could of been born somewhere outside of Scotland?

It is always difficult to find info. pre 1855 (apart from census')..........a case of pot luck as it depended on the local parish records & any info. depending on the status of the family.

Can you share the info. you have on Betsy's family.......names/dates please as someone may be able to help  ???

Hello  :)

Yes I will tell you what it says on her death certificate.

It's says that she passed away July 6, 1865 in Kirktown, St Cyrus. It says her parents names were James Wood a master mason and that her mothers name was Mary Jarvis, an agricultural labourer.

I've only just noticed something though, at the bottom of where it says Betsey Alison (wife of William Alison, salmon fisher)  it says 'illegitimate' in brackets....
