Drowned in Well
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 14:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

Trying to find some further information about a death of a child which I appeared in a small newspaper article in Sheffield on the 6th Oct 1887. The article stated that daughter of John Wright of Chisworth near Glossop was found drowned in a nearby well to her parents home. How the child got into the well was unknown. The child was 2 years and 2 months and I believe her to be Florence Wright. I presume there would have been some kind of inquest into this? And if so where would I start.  Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Death Cert will indicate if an Inquest was held .... finding surviving documentation may be a problem ... Newspapers a good source of what was said at a Coroners Court ...

Article from the Sheffield Independent 08/10/1887 reports on an inquest held at Charlesworth near Glossop into the death of a girl "two years and four months old" , Florence Wright, whose body was found in a well near her parent's home.Shortly before the body was found she had been seen playing in front of the house. The jury's verdict was "Found Drowned".

Many thanks for your help. I did a search of the newspapers but never saw the one you mentioned. I'll look again.

On another note. Does anybody with a good knowledge of Chisworth know where his well was situated? The family lived in one of the houses at Fatting Hey. I know Chisworth a bit but can't think of any well, Although realise it would be bricked up probably now.

Thanks
