Date please for possible Henry Dunmil Paddick family member
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 19:38 BST (UK) »
This is said to be Henry Dunmill Paddick, who died in South Australia in 1872, but I wonder if the style of dress looks too modern. I would appreciate any comments, especially on the unusual tie. I do not have the original.

I presume you mean the original photo and not the tie Didy ;D.

Have you cropped the photo? Is it possible to see more?  Going by what I can see, I think it might fit with your date but would like to see more if possible.

Bumping up really as Didy hasn't had much response. Come on you daters ;)

Yes, I did mean the photo  ;D

The full photo doesn't add much, except possibly to refer to his age. He was 61 when he died in 1872, and I don't think he looks quite that old here. It would have to been taken in the 1850s or 1860s to fit the dates.  :-\

I don't think he's very old at all in the picture - just suffered from early onset receding hairline!  :(

I would think the man shown is at oldest 40, i.e. if he was born in c1812, this would make the picture 1850's which is very early, so this may throw out your identification?

Very snazzy tie.  I can't see how it works......

I agree, Igor, but the ID was made by a family member who remembers the photo on their gran's mantelpiece, and that it was Henry Dunwill Paddick. The thing is, there was a grandson named Henry (John) Paddick, born in 1868, so if the photo is definitely a Henry, it could be him. It would still be a 19th century photograph, but an uncle or cousin of the Paddick gran who had it, rather than her grandfather.

It would help if we could see the whole thing uncropped and also the back if you could get a scan. For now I'd say the hard oval vignette was popular in the 1870s so neither of your candidates sound likely :(

Jim1 might know more about the tie if he drops in. It is unusual.

He's wearing an American style tie but instead of tying it in a bow he's elected for this strange arrangement.
Men did wear this type of tie in the UK in the 1860's/70's but it was the preserve of younger men like him.
As china said we really need to see an uncropped image & the back to give an accurate date but his general style looks 1870's to me as well.
As for age I would say somewhere between 30 & 40.

Have you thought of dating it by the style of beard and mutton chops?

If you had access to the original the Art gallery or a photo restorer
may have knowledge of the material used in the print and therefor its date.
