Dennis COLLINGRIDGE convicted 1845
« on: Friday 03 April 15 20:18 BST (UK) »
Dennis COLLINGRIDGE was convicted of Larceny by Servant (theft of 14lb of tallow from currier, Mr William Williams, his master) on 21 Feb 1845 at Northampton Borough Sessions and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment.  At the time of conviction, Dennis was given as being 24. An item in the Northampton Mercury of 22 Feb 1845 gives details.

However, I have no Dennis COLLINGRIDGE in my database.  A open search of FindMyPast, Ancestry and FamilySearch has not produced a birth, marriage or death nor any censuses

Can someone help me find him please?

Thank you for you reply.

He might be.  I wouldn't have made the connection between the two names (obviously) :)

Dionysius gets mentioned in the Morning Post a couple of times for assaulting a Customs Officer,. He was found guilty and went down for five months. I'm sure I found some other mentions but they must be on my old machine.

The Goddington connection says he was a member of the staunchly Roman Catholic family of farmers and land owners.

I've had a dig around in some old handwritten notes and found a Denis who was born 1820, no place given but others on the same line (siblings) were born in Goddington.  There's nothing else for him other than he "died abroad 1864".  It's not my particular branch so I don't know where the information came from.  There's no source in the notes.

The branch this Denis was on had a couple of cousins (brothers) who emigrated to Australia.

Dionysius is in Essex in 1861, a boarder, given as a Landed Proprietor of Godington (which fits for the family) but he doesn't appear in any census after that.

If Den(n)is and Dionysius are one and the same, it begs the question why he changed from a fairly normal name to an exotic one and also why he was apparently a servent - unless he was actually an apprentice (hence William Williams being his master).

I think it is the same name or derivation. Maybe it was just used as a shortened name like Thomas and Tom.

I believe Dionysius is from Greek Mythology, Dennis the vernacular form of the name.

That seems logical.  I really need to try finding the baptism for the Denis on the tree so see what that says.  At least knowing the family were Catholic is a help.  I have a vague recollection of being told the family had access to a priest, if not in their own property then a neighbouring one.  Any registers kept may not have survived.

Thank you for your reply.  It looks as though I am looking at one person, rather than two.  That's helpful :)
