I had a look at that Walter and it is not him.  He was still alive well after 1901.

Found him listed as dying on the Swazi Border.  The was on the Anglo Boer war site and said the information came from "UK, Casualties of the Boer War, 1899-1902” Entries for The Border Regiment!

Will see if I can find out more about the Border Regiment
