Ipswich Air Raids
« on: Saturday 04 April 15 14:10 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone is able to help me dig up some more information about an air raid.

My great great grandfather was Albert Walter Poole, although he was retired he apparently requested work during the second world war. He was killed in a bus during an air raid on his way home. I have not been able as of yet to find any air raids where any buses were affected or any bus related casualties.

I would like to pinpoint the raid in which he died, so if anyone has any information that would help, or any tips on how I could find the raid (if it is even possible to do so) it would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Duncan

There is a will online for an Albert Walter Poole who died on the 28/4/1941-don't know if this is your ancestor.
regards.

The document that you will find helpful at the Suffolk Records Office in Ipswich is DC 8, Ipswich Borough Defence Department files on casualties.

Do let us know how you get on.

If he was killed by enemy action then he should be commemorated by the CWGC as Civilian War Dead. I cannot find him listed there. He could have been overlooked but it seems unlikely.

Bombs certainly dropped on Ipswich on the night of 28/29 April 1941.

the operative word here is "should"

Duncan
E-mail: enquiries@ipswichtransportmuseum.co.uk to ask if they have details of busses damaged through E/A. and/or ask them to put you  in contact with a researcher who is willing to help you.  I'm sure someone will volunteer.

Imber,

I regret not as it is outside my period of special interest.

Not quite sure what you mean here. In my experience in the records department at CWGC civilian war deaths were pretty reliable, more so than WW1 for example. Local authorities were pretty good at reporting these deaths but, as in all areas of life, there are always exceptions which is why I said "he could have been overlooked". Not clear whether Duncan Bennie has the death certificate which might well have indicated death as a result of enemy action. If it turns out to be so then CWGC will add the name given the evidence.
