Can anyone recommend a good 35mm slide scanner please?
« on: Saturday 04 April 15 14:21 BST (UK) »
Please can somebody recommend an easy to use 35mm slide scanner that gives good results? We have hundreds of mounted slides from the 60s and 70s that need scanning to digital format. There are so many scanners on the market from as little as £30 and I am confused as to which is the sensible one to go for. Any advise will be very much appreciated. Thank you. Graham :)

I bought a Maginon scanner from Aldi, cost £14. I have only used it for scanning negative's with, which seem fine. A better quality/more expensive one might give give better results but I'm happy with it.

Not heard of the Maginon scanner but at just £14 it sounds a bargain! I finally decided to buy a Veho VFS-008 Smartfix Slide & Negative Scanner. It was £50 from Amazon but I am very pleased with it. Scans a 35mm slide in just 4 seconds and the quality and colour balance is very good. It also scans 110mm film negatives which is a bonus. It scans directly to the supplied 2GB SD card so it's simple to transfer the scans to computer in large batches. My only niggle is that it's slightly fiddly to load the slide tray (it takes 3 at a time) but for speed and quality of scanning it's excellent. It has a 2.4 inch preview LCD screen and rechargeable battery. :)

The Maginon is powered through a USB connection, the scans are direct to the computer. It's geared for 35mm but 110 negatives will scan, also 127 negatives with a little cropping. 120 [21/4 square] is too big. The slide scanning attachment is for 35mm.

Might be too late to help UKMusic, but I achieved very satisfactory results by simply taking a photo with my digital camera of the slides projected onto a screen.

With camera set on tripod, it only took an instant to click the shutter, then move on to next slide in the projector. Quick, easy and not expensive.  :)

Good Luck, John B
