Mabel Catherine Alice Elsdale born Chester

Henry Elsdale, Officer, Royal Engineers, was married to Alice. Being a Royal Engineer the marriage could be anywhere! Their only  known child Mabel Catherine Alice Elsdale was baptized 31 October 1877 St. John the Baptist, Chester. A 25 year old Alice Elsdale is on Free BMD with a death registered in Dec. 1877 Quarter, Chester. No Parish burial records seem to be available for this Parish outside Cheshire for the 1870's. Any help gratefully received. The family is linked to me but not related so I am reluctant to order the certificates.

Henry Elsdale remarried 1 February 1887, Lamport, Northamptonshire,  Kate (that's her official name) Moorhouse, a New Zealander.

Henry died in San Francisco 25.2.1900 and probate was granted to Edward Moorhouse.

If you are looking for Alice's maiden name - the only way will be to buy a copy of Mabel's birth cert

Henry's British Regimental Register of Service (Canada) confirms his birth as 20th January 1843 in Moulton Spalding Lincoln.

First marriage 20th October 1875 to Alice Sterling Dundrum Nr Dublin (Taney church) - her date of death is given as 27th October 1877.One child - Mabel Caroline Alice b 30th September 1877 St Johns Chester.

Second marriage 1st February 1887 to Kate Moorhouse, Lamport Northamptonshire. Two children
Henry Lefton 25th November 1887 Gillingham and Robinson 29th May 1892 Cathedral Exeter.

The dates of his service from Lieutenant to Colonel are also given.

Thank you everyone of you. I will answer you all.

"The marriage of a Royal Engineer could be anywhere" .........but if not in England and Wales a very strong possibility could be Ireland and rosie 99 was right.

1881 Census. Mabel is with her Grandmother Elizabeth but AUNT Florence is the key.

1891 Census. Mabel is with her father in England. Henry the Royal Engineer is now Head of Household. His SISTER Florence is living with them.

1884-1885 Henry was in Canada and was the pioneer of military ballooning. His photographs taken from the balloon in Canada still exist.

Henry died in San Francisco. Henry's journey was on a Victorian Concorde. He was residing in Hong Kong but Australian/NZ travellers could do the same. He left Hong Kong on a Ship to San Francisco. Then he planned to take the train from San Francisco to say New York and then take another ship to Liverpool or London.

Some years ago I was looking into the "Jack the Ripper" suspects and one of them was the Victorian painter Walter Sickert.  It was his brother that I saw going to Australia from England by the same method.

Mabel married Edward Trustram 1898, Westminster, London area
Widowed Mabel married Eyre Massey Shaw, Kensington, London  area 1930.

Henry S. (Sefton) Elsdale married Vivian Jenness Miller 31 August 1921, All Saints, Pasadena, Los Angeles (County), California. They left USA a few months later for England.
